Why Christian Internet Filtering and Accountability?
There
are several reasons why we recommend Internet filtering PLUS accountability.
First of all, one of the biggest sin issues for most Christian
men is pornography on the
Internet. In 1996, a Promise Keepers survey revealed
that over 50% of the men in
attendance at one of their stadium
events had been involved with pornography within one week of attending
the event. In 2000, a Christianity Today survey showed that 33% of
clergy admitted to having visited a sexually explicit Web site. Of
those who had visited a porn site, 53% had done so “a few times” in
the past year, and 18% visit sexually explicit sites between a couple
of times a month and more than once a week. Both of these surveys are
old, especially by Internet standards, so it is certain
that these percentages are much lower than the actual numbers today.
It is very likely that you have, or have had in the past, a problem
with what you view on the Internet; most men have. If you're looking
at
things on the Internet that you shouldn't be, then you need to stop,
right now. If you're married you are sinning against God AND your wife
and certainly not honoring her the way you should. If you're single
you are sinning against God and you are certainly not honoring Him
the way you should. Additionally, you are developing habits that will
go with you into your marriage.

The second reason why we recommend Internet filtering AND accountability
is for the safety and protection of children. In a recent survey, one
in four kids reported having at least one unwanted exposure to sexually
explicit pictures during the past year, and one out of five reported
receiving a sexual solicitation. This is a very serious problem
which puts all children at great risk. It is vitally important
that Christian parents take steps to protect their children from this
horrible aspect of the Internet via filtering and reporting, so that
they cannot view pornography and so that you can see where they are
going on the Internet.
The combination of filtering and reporting gives Christian parents
a 1-2 punch against Internet pornographers and predators. Here's what
we recommend:
- Sign up for the SafeEyes Christian Internet filtering service (which
includes free reporting). Click
here to sign up.
- Install the Internet filter on your computer. Follow the directions
to select the areas of the Internet you want to filter. We recommend
restricting instant messaging, chat, FTP and other categories which
could contain pornography or enable a predator to contact your child.
- Have someone change the password so that you and your children
do not know if. Your wife is the best person for this, of a trusted
friend if you're not married. It is important that you do not know
the password so that you cannot simply bypass the filtering and reporting
when you want to look at pornography.
- Put your wife (if married) or a trusted friend on distribution for the
accountability reports. If you have an accountability partner, you
can have it sent to him, but we still recommend having it go to your
wife as well. Why? Because, frankly, knowing that your wife will
see a record of every site you visit is a HUGE deterrent.
"I made a covenant with my eyes
not to look lustfully at a girl."
